The Benefits Of MSM

The Benefits Of MSM

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a sulfur-containing compound that is closely related to the amino acid family. Essentially, MSM provides the body with sulfur, which helps form proteins-such as collagen-that make up connective tissues. These connective tissues include cartilage, hence the MSM link to joint health. MSM is available in certain foods, particularly cow's milk, but efficacious amounts are more easily obtained through supplements. Nutritionists believe that MSM supplementation may help the body synthesize and maintain healthy cartilage.

Although MSM occurs naturally, it is found in such tiny quantities in plants and animals making it prohibitive to extract commercially. MSM is synthesized by reacting two common chemicals, dimethyl sulfoxide and hydrogen peroxide, formingan entirely new compound. Pure MSM is then separated from impurities using distillation or crystallizing methods.

MSM and osteoarthritis

Although muchMSM success in treating osteoarthritis is anecdotal, the first randomized controlled trial on the use of MSM for joint pain, published in the November 2005 issue of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, revealed positive findings for MSM. When subjects were given six grams of MSM daily for three months, they experienced less arthritis pain and improved physical function without side effects.

Nutritionists are saying that until more research is done on MSM, those considering using MSM may want to do so in conjunction with glucosamine and chondroitin to create a synergy of effectiveness.
